Krempel is continuing to invest in the performance of its Thalheim site and is optimising the feed units of the pressboard machine used to produce rolled pressboard. The aim of the process optimisation is to increase production capacity, further improve product properties and make manufacturing processes even more efficient and sustainable.
This measure is an important step towards meeting rising market demand. Global demand for pressboard is growing steadily – particularly due to the expansion of renewable energy and the increasing replacement of transformers reaching the end of their technical service life. Krempel expects additional market potential of 30 to 40 % by 2029.
Process optimisation for greater output and quality
The optimisation focuses on the headbox units of the pressboard machine. By installing three circular screens with new headbox units within the existing installation space, the aim is to achieve a significant improvement in the length-to-width ratio. This is based on a stable stock density of 0.25 to 0.35 % and a consistent speed ratio as the stock exits onto the screen. In addition to increasing production volume, the aim is also to improve product properties, facilitate new product developments and reduce waste and off-cuts. Further objectives include improved health and safety during roll changes, a reduction in costs, and a reduction in CO₂ emissions and gas consumption.
Automation ensures stable processes
A key component of the modernisation is the automation of the pulp circulation system. Whereas, prior to the refurbishment, the fill level in the distribution box was adjusted manually via a control valve, amongst other things, control following the optimisation is now automated via sensors, frequency-controlled pump technology, and flow and control valves. In this way, Krempel is laying the foundations for more stable process conditions, reproducible quality and more efficient production. The new headboxes and the automated control system support a more even distribution of material and help to meet the requirements for modern pressboard products even more reliably.
Strengthening the Paper Technology Competence Centre
By optimising the pressboard machine, Krempel is strengthening the Competence Centre at its Thalheim site. The investment contributes to the strategic development of pressboard production and reinforces Krempel’s position as a reliable partner for high-quality technical materials in demanding applications. All the refurbishment work was carried out in close collaboration with regional partners and companies. In doing so, Krempel not only underlines its commitment to the Thalheim site, but also strengthens regional value creation and the local network.
